Getting Out the Door with Kids

Getting Out the Door with Kids

(And to Church on time)

Often people that have less children ask how I get to church early with so many small children (and we have few children compared to some).  It’s not easy.  But hear are a have a few things that help us:

  1. Lay out the children’s clothes the night before.  (That way my husband can help get them dressed, and their clothes will still match.)
  2. Take all planned showers the night before (There are sometimes unplanned emergency showers for the kids.)
  3. I premix a healthy breakfast that my family can take with them.  Our current favorite is “The Breakfast Cookie.” (The recipe to follow)
  4. I print out my lesson sometime the week before and gather the stuff I will need the night before.
  5. I decide what I am going to wear the next day.
  6. My husband helps!

The morning routine:

  • Get up and preheat oven, mix apple sauce in cookie mix, scoop out cookies and bake put them in the oven. (set timer for 20 min.)
  • Get self dressed, brush teeth and comb hair.
  • Help the children get ready (and find socks.  I always forget to set the socks out.)
  • While my husband loads the children into the car, I get the cookies out of the oven and wrap them in paper towels.
  • We are on our way!

The Breakfast Cookie Mix

Dry mix ahead:

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup raisins
  • 1/3 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup wheat germ
  • 1/3 cup flaxseed meal
  • 1/3 cup coconut flakes
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped (I crush them in my hands)
  • 2/3 cup soy flour (for non dairy, use powdered milk to add dairy)
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • (Might want o try 1/3 cup chocolate chips)

Wet mix right before baking:

  • 1 1/2 cups apple sauce

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease large cookie sheet
2.  Mix 1 1/2 cups apple sauce into the dry mix.
3.  Scoop out with an ice cream scoop and smash with your fingers (to 1/2”-3/4”)
4.  Bake for 20 minutes, place on cooling rack and turn off the oven

If anyone wants to add any suggestions, I would love the help.

  • My husband just sent me a wonderfully funny post from that illustrates my point quite nicely.
